Edfu is a town located on the western bank of the
Nile between Esna and Aswan. Esna was known in ancient Egypt as Bhdt. During
the Greco-Roman period, it became the capital of the 2nd nome of Upper Egypt
and was also known as Apollonopolis Magna or Apollinopolis Magna. The modern
Arabic name of the city derives from its Coptic name, Etbo or Edbo. Edfu was
the location of the mythological battle between Horus Behdety, the main deity
of Edfu and to whom its temple is dedicated, who symbolised good, and Seth,
Horus Behdety's uncle and his arch-enemy, who symbolised evil.
