Edfu Temple

Home > Travel Guide > Egypt > Edfu > Edfu Temple

Edfu Temple is the most complete and best-preserved of all temples in Egypt. It is located in Edfu, on the western bank of the Nile. The temple is dedicated to the triad of Edfu: Horus Behdety, his wife Hathor, and their son Horus Sema Tawy. The temple was built by Ptolemy III Euergetes and completed during the reign of Ptolemy XII Auletes. The temple’s construction took about 180 years to be completed because of political unrest in Upper Egypt during the Ptolemaic period, especially during the reign of Ptolemy IV and V. Edfu Temple has some scenes of festivals relevant to traditions and myths connected with Horus Behdety. These festivals are the coronation of the falcon, the victory of the falcon, New Year’s Day, and the good reunion. The temple also has the traditional religious scenes of Ptolemy kings with the triad of Edfu and other gods and goddesses.
