Dendera, also spelled Denderah, is a small city in Qena Governorate. It is located on the western bank of the Nile, 5 kilometres northwest of Qena Governorate, and approximately 74 kilometres north of Luxor City. Dendera was the capital of the 6th nome of Upper Egypt. Its original name was Iwnt, which later became Iwnt-Ta-Ntrt. The modern Arabic name of the city derives from its Greek name, Tentyris. Dendera's main deity was Hathor, to whom its great temple is dedicated.
