Home > Travel Guide > Egypt > Esna > Esna Temple

Esna Temple is one of the most famous temples in Egypt. It is located in the heart of Esna, 50 kilometres south of Luxor. The temple stands below the level of the surrounding area, emphasising that the modern city has been built over several temples. The temple is mainly dedicated to the god Khnum, his consorts Menhit and Nebtu, their son, Heka, and the goddess Neith. Esna Temple was built during the Ptolemaic period and completed and decorated during the Roman period. The temple has some religious scenes of various Ptolemaic kings and Roman emperors, represented as Egyptian pharaohs, with different gods and goddesses.
