Saint Mark's Cathedral

Home > Travel Guide > Egypt > Alexandria > Saint Mark's Cathedral

Saint Mark's Cathedral is the oldest church in Egypt and Africa and one of the most famous churches in the world. It dates back to 62 A.D. The church was built by Saint Mark, the author of the Gospel of Mark, the first bishop of Alexandria, and the founder of Christianity in Africa. Saint Mark, also called St. Mark the Evangelist, was arrested during the festival of Serapis and died by being dragged through the streets in 68 A.D. His relics were stolen by some Venetian merchants in 828 A.D. However, Saint Mark's head remained in Alexandria. The body of Saint Mark was restored in 1986, during the reign of Pope Shenouda III.
