El Alamein is a city in Matrouh Governorate, located on the north coast of Egypt, 115 kilometres west of Alexandria. It lies on the site of a Greek city called Antiphrai or Leukaspis. El Alamein was the site of two major battles between British and Axis forces in 1942 during World War II. After World War II, some memorial cemeteries were erected near the battle site by Germany, Italy, and Great Britain, honouring their martyred soldiers. The battle site still has some land mines. Today, El Alamein has several luxurious hotels and resorts, making it the perfect destination for local and foreign tourists during the summer.
