Luxor is one of the most famous cities in Upper Egypt, which includes the site of Thebes, the main city of the fourth nome of Upper Egypt and the capital of Egypt for a long time during the Middle Kingdom and New Kingdom periods. The site of Thebes includes areas on both the Nile's eastern and western banks, where the temples of Karnak and Luxor stand and where the city was located, as well as a necropolis of large private and royal cemeteries and funerary complexes. Thebes was the cult centre of the god Amun, who was always expressed in fusion with the god of the sun, Ra.
The name of the city derives from the Arabic word "Qasr," which means "palace." The city is recognised as the world’s biggest open-air museum, as it contains the ruins of the temples of Luxor and Karnak. Today, many tourists of different nationalities travel to Luxor annually to visit its monuments and temples and witness its greatness.
