Aswan, also spelled Assuan or Assouan, is one of Egypt's famous tourist cities. It is located in Upper Egypt on the east bank of the Nile, below the First Cataract. In ancient Egypt, Aswan was called Swenett, which was derived from an Egyptian goddess of the same name. Swenett had military importance as it was the frontier town of ancient Egypt facing the south. Its local quarries supplied the granite used in building most obelisks, shrines, and colossal statues.
