Amr Ibn El Aas Mosque is the oldest mosque in Egypt and Africa. Amr Ibn El As was the commander who led the Arab conquest of Egypt and was one of the first companions of Prophet Mohamed. The mosque was built in 640 A.D. in Fustat, the first Islamic capital in Egypt. Amr Ibn El Aas Mosque served as the centre of Islamic learning and a gathering place for the Muslim community and army troops.

The original layout of the mosque was very modest. It was made from palm tree trunks, stones, and mud bricks, covered by a roof of wood and palm leaves. Many restorations and additions were made to the mosque by different rulers of Egypt through the ages, including adding minarets and prayer niches and enlarging the mosque.
