Saqqara Necropolis

Djoser, also called Zoser, was the founder of Egypt’s third dynasty. His vizier Imhotep constructed Djoser's funerary complex at Saqqara, which was the ancient Egyptian necropolis. The complex is recognised as the first stone building in the world.

A great wall of limestone encloses the whole complex, which measures 10.4 metres high. The enclosure wall has 15 doors, 14 of which are false, and only one is true.

Step Pyramid

Djoser’s pyramid was built in steps. The original structure had the form of a square mastaba. Many enlargements and modifications were made before the pyramid took its current form: six steps rising to a height of 60 meters, with a base measuring 121 x 109 meters. It was coated with the fine limestone of Turah. The pyramidal shape probably resembles the staircase mentioned in the Pyramid Texts, which the dead king's spirit climbed on his way into heaven.
