Sultan Hassan Mosque and Madrasa
Sultan Hassan’s Mosque and Madrasa are located in Cairo's Salah El Din Square. It is one of the most significant monuments in the Islamic world. It was constructed in 1356 by Mamluk Sultan Hassan, who reigned over Egypt twice. Sultan Hassan Mosque overlooks Al Rumayla Square, which was a hippodrome and horse market. Al Rumayla Square, now called Salah El Din Square, was used for military parades and official ceremonies. During the mosque’s erection, Egypt suffered from the Black Plague, which decreased the number of workers and increased the cost of construction.
Sultan Hassan Mosque is 36 metres high and has two minarets. Due to its location near Cairo Citadel and its massive construction, Sultan Hassan Madrasa was used as a fort by rebels to attack Cairo Citadel, especially during the reign of Sultan Barquq.
